On July, 4, 1862 two learned Oxford dons and three children rowed up the river Isis that flows into the Thames. One of the dons was the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). To amuse his companions he told them a story, making it up as he went along. The children were entranced with the story and one of them (ten year old Alice Liddell) begged Mr Dodgson to write it out for her. He sat up the whole night writing in his best library script, what he could remember of the songs and tales he had improvised. And thus was started the first draft of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. How did it happen that Dodgson, lecturer on geometry at Oxford on that single July afternoon gave birth to one of the most famous stories of all time? Florence Becker Lennon has set herslef the task of solving this riddle. She seeks it with thimbles, she seeks it with care, she pursues it with forks and hope. With a diffident but determined curiosity (like Alice's) she examines his religious and political beliefs, his intellect and his heart, in an attemp to discover how this gentle and scholarly man, who ouwardly seemed the very prototype of the conventional Victorian don, wrung out of himself a complete bible of folklore, poetry, mythology and humour.…
