KB65.40 pp. Octavo. Original brown card covers with red ruling and title, stapled at spine. Covers are a bit grubby, a couple of pencil notes on the front cover, top front corner broken off, identifying numbers in black at bottom spine/front cover, back cover (with a nice ad for Royal Templars of Temperance insurance) has a numer of chips and short tears. Interior has some thumbing at very occasional light pencil marks, but otherwise clean and sturdy. Quite scarce in the wild. Rev. Benjamin H. Spence (the brother of Francis Stephens Spence) came from an Irish Protestant family of temperance activists. "Reverend Benjamin H. Spence (1867-? ) , colloquially known as "Mr. Prohibition of Canada, " was a prohibitionist who was actively involved in the temperance movement in Toronto. His father, Jacob Spence, was involved in the abstinence movement in Ireland before he came to Upper Canada in 1861 where he continued his work." (from the CAMH Spence collection).
