A propos de cet article

Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, 280 pp, 61 ills, 8 maps. From the blurb: "In February 1836, the first section of London's first steam railway, the London and Greenwich, began to operate. Within the next few years the great lines to Birmingham and Bristol, designed by Robert Stephenson and I. K. Brunel, opened their London terminals, and soon London, like the rest of the country, was in the grip of the 'railway mania'. Edwin Course tells how and why many of London's railway lines were first laid out and developed; who were the engineers who designed them, who provided the money, and what survivals - and there are surprisingly many - may still be seen from these early days. Dr. Course, who is on the staff of the University of Southampton, has always been a railway enthusiast; indeed his doctoral thesis on the railways of London and South Eastern England provided the basis for the research from which this book was written. But so far from being a desiccated academic treatise, the book will interest many who are not railway enthusiasts, for Dr. Course has a quiet dry humour, an eye for out-of-the-way quotation and a sympathy for the odd and idiosyncratic which help to relate his book to the social and human history of London. (When was a graveyard moved by night so that a railway might be built on the land? Where was a housing scheme projected under the arches of a railway viaduct? The answers to these questions are some of the unexpected items of information with which the reader is incidentally presented.) The illustrations, like the text, embrace the whole span of London's railway history; they include a series of clear and highly informative maps which Dr. Course has himself made." Some mottling to boards and musty-smelling, contents Good in a slightly edgeworn and browned dustwrapper.…
