A propos de cet article

DICKENS, Charles; THACKERAY, William Makepeace. The Loving Ballad of Lord Bateman. Illustrated by George Cruikshank. London: Charles Tilt, 1839. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with “wine” for “vine” in the fifth stanza. Original green cloth covers, pictorially blocked in gilt, preserved at the rear. Sextodecimo. 40 pp., [8] pp. publisher’s advertisements. Bound by Rivière in full red crushed morocco, with raised bands, richly gilt spine compartments, gilt inner dentelles, and top edge gilt. Illustrated with eleven etched plates by George Cruikshank, including the frontispiece, and a separate engraved plate of music. A humorous Cockney rendering of a traditional English ballad, recounting Lord Bateman’s captivity in Turkey, his rescue by his captor’s daughter, and their eventual reunion in England. The ballad text is attributed to William Makepeace Thackeray, with the prefatory “Warning to the Public” and notes by Charles Dickens. Cruikshank’s illustrations accompany the narrative, while the preface and notes provide an elaborate parody of scholarly commentary. Anne Lyon Haight’s study provides a detailed examination of Cruikshank’s, Dickens’s, and Thackeray’s participation in the work. Contents generally clean and unmarked. Binding is sound and square. Front cover rehinged. Armorial bookplate and previous owner’s inscription. A fresh, bright copy. A Near Fine first edition, first issue, in a Rivière binding. Primary reference: Haight, Anne Lyon. Charles Dickens Tries to Remain Anonymous: Notes on ‘The Loving Ballad of Lord Bateman’; Cohn 243; Yale/Gimbel B84. [Attributes: First Edition; Illustrated; Hard Cover.].…
