1st edition. 4 volume set, complete. A Very Good set. [Vol.1] viii, (ii), 466; [Vol.2] 500; [Vol.3] 519; [Vol.4] 532 pp., illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece, and the four page facsimile of the early draft of the Declaration of Independence. Uniformly bound in period, full tree calf, with title and volume on red and black morocco labels on the spine. Boards rubbed, volume 1 more than the rest. End papers browning, with scattered foxing and browning throughout. The folding facsimile is slightly curled at the fore edge. A handsome set, in original binding, and a good example of early American binding. Howes R-60, Sabin 35891. Volume one was written by Jefferson at age 77, and includes a journal kept by him while Secretary of State during Washingtons administration. "The rest consists exclusively of a voluminous correspondence, ranging from 1775, after blood had been spilt in Boston, to June 1826, only ten days before his death" (Sabin). With four-page folding facsimile of Jeffersons manuscript of the Declaration of Independence, and engraved frontispiece portrait after Gilbert Stuart in Volume 4.
