Folio (12 1/4" x 7 7/8"). Full smooth calf, double rule-bordered in gilt, with several stains and a worn, cracked patch to front board; some wear and minor scratching to rear board. Evidence of rebacking upon which old(er) leather spine has been affixed. Four (out of five) raised bands remaining, six compartments, each gilt-decorated, with contrasting black spine label to second compartment from top. Small portion of spine caps perished, with later mulling/repair visible. Moderate rubbing to extremities. Marbled endpapers with evidence of joint repair. Bookplate to front pastedown. engraved by S.L.S. -- Sidney Lawton Smith (1845-1929) -- from the Lynn, Massachusetts Public Library. Opposite the title page is affixed, within a rectangular border, a large, striking engraving of Mary Queen of Scots, possibly by H. Jacobsen (ca. 1623). [16], 204, [28]. "The Epistle to The Reader"; "The Author to His Son.". Text. An Alphabetical Table of the Principal Matter Contained in this Book"; "An Alphabetical Interpretation of all the Scotch Words and Phrases Contained in This History." This edition is known to exist in at least 2 states." of which this copy is the second, thusly: ".p. 26 & 31 are misnumbered 31 & 26 respectively and p. 65 & 128 are numbered correctly." ESTC R201. Melville was a Scottish diplomat, memoir writer, page and special envoy to Mary Queen of Scots concerning Queen Elizabeth. "At Halhill, Melville wrote the Memoirs of my own Life, a valuable authority for the history of the period, first published by his grandson, George Scott of Pitlochie, in 1683, from a manuscript discovered at Edinburgh Castle in 1660. The most complete edition of the Memoirs is that prepared by Thomas Thomson for the Bannatyne Club (Edinburgh, 1827), based on a manuscript discovered in 1827. Some eighteenth-century Scottish historians doubted the authenticity of Scott's publication. Gordon Donaldson notes in Scott (1683) some editing errors and suppression of the more sinister dealings of English government before Mary's condemnation.".
