First edition of this Depression-era novel about a determined working woman and her socially scheming daughter - the basis of the 1945 film noir classic starring Joan Crawford. In addition to the now iconic 1945 film, MILDRED PIERCE was adapted into an HBO miniseries in 2011, with Kate Winslet in the titular role. Though the film is a much looser adaptation (limited in large part by the Hays Code in its ability to be faithful to the source material), it was a massive critical and commercial success and responsible for around half of Warner Brothers' profits for the year of its release. 7.5'' x 5.25''. Original bright green boards with blind stamping to front board and gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($2.50) color pictorial jacket by Bob Smith. Machine deckle fore-edge, dark grey topstain.[8], 290 pages. Pencil owner inscription to front fly leaf (including read date "May 1944"). Jacket with some edgewear and rubbing, few small scattered chips. A handful of leaves with tiny pinpricks near margin, else bright and sound. Very good plus in very good jacket.
