A propos de cet article

First edition. 8vo. 43,[1]pp. No half-title. Stitched pamphlet. Toned and stained. Title and first 3 leaves with a short, closed tear at inner margins. Corners creased. Ownership inscription of James Northrop 1890, twice on front cover. Final leaves with short tears at top forecorners (not affecting text). Fair. The ownership inscription is likely that of James Henry Northrop (1856-1940), the British born Boston resident who most famously invented the Northrop Loom, revolutionizing the textile industry. An unusually combative farewell sermon by Rev. David Rowland of the First Church in Plainfield, Conn. It is surprising that some of the parishioners wanted the sermon to be printed. For that, Benjamin Mecom was chosen. Mecom was Jane Franklin’s son and was named after his famous uncle, founding father, Benjamin Franklin. Franklin tried for years to help his nephew, apprenticing him to his business partner, James Parker in New York, financing his Antigua adventure (to publish the Antigua Gazette), helping him in Boston where this pamphlet was published and giving him a job as the postmaster of New Haven. Mecom appears to have suffered from mental illness. He was described as “often Depriv’d of his Reason”. Jane Franklin, in a letter to her brother, Benjamin, wrote that her son was last seen “wandering” in Burlington, NJ., when that city fell to the British in December 1776, “when he disappeared and has never been heard of since.” Rev. Rowland laments the fracture of his congregation which for years he tried to remedy. Calling it wickedness, saying that it reached “a great height in the days of his honored predecessor” [Rev. Joseph Coit, 1672-1750], “bringing his gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.” There were no charges against Rev. Rowland, but the parishioners wanted him to leave, as did he. In the sermon he calls them sinners and tells them to repent and be with God. “Oh Plainfield! Oh Plainfield! Thou that despiseth the means for thy conversion and salvation, how often would I have gathered thy children together unto me; and yet ye would not hearken to my compassionate calls, but have hardned your hearts against my love, and repaid me with contempt hatred and persecution!” Scarce. ESTC finds 12 copies in 8 institutions, all in the United States. Evans 9000, Sabin 73561, ESTCW26194 [First Church in Plainfield, Conn.].…
