Synopsis :

The introduction of the mentally ill into the community, in "families", in central France is at the heart of this study. The book examines the psychological and social effects of this development. It shows how, despite their de-institutionalization, the afflicted people are unable to shrug off the stigma of otherness. The book goes on to treat this instance as an instructive example of alienation, in that the normal social and racial factors are not operative, and the social processes involved in rejection and separation may be more readily observed and explained.
