1927. First UK edition. [v], 378pp. John Roderigo Dos Passos (1896-1970) was an American novelist, probably best known for his U.S.A. trilogy. Manhattan Transfer was first published in the U.S.A. in 1925, and focuses on the development of urban life in New York City from the Gilded Age to the Jazz Age as told through a series of overlapping individual stories. It is considered to be one of Dos Passos' most important works. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and staining, probably from water splashing. The corners and spine ends are lightly bumped with a little damage to the cloth around the tips of the bottom corners and the top rear spine corner. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing to the first few pages and fore edge of the text block and the half-title page is browned. There is a water stain on the fore edge of pages 317 onwards that is very small at the start and grows in size to the end of the book. A name has been written on the front fixed endpaper.
