Six black & white illus. & one facsimile drawing in-fine. [12] pp. 8vo, pictorial wrappers, staple-bound. Cologne: Galerie der Spiegel, 1953. A very rare Ernst (1891-1976) exhibition catalogue; WorldCat locates a single example in North America. Upon Ernst?s return to Cologne, near his hometown of Br?hl, for the first time since 1922, he met the gallerist couple Eva and Hein St?nke who managed the Galerie der Spiegel. This catalogue was produced for the first exhibition they partnered on, and there were several further shows together. The St?nkes sold a number of the artist?s works to German museums and collectors, re-forging Ernst?s connection with the country. The exhibition presented 23 pictures (enumerated in a check-list), all completed in 1953. The first illustration shows Ernst painting and the other five document paintings in the present show. One of his human figures is reproduced on the final page. There is a biography at the end, with a list of related publications and catalogues. In fine condition. A previous owner has added small red circles to most of the check-list and the illustration captions, along with one pencil note. || ZADIK at the University of Cologne staged an exhibition Max Ernst und die Galerie Der Spiegel (8 May-30 September 2005) highlighting Ernst's special relationship with the St?nkes.
