A propos de cet article

Yulia Fausek was one of the earliest and most dedicated advocates of Montessori education in Russia. Trained as a teacher and deeply engaged in the emerging international conversation on child development, she became a central figure in adapting Western pedagogical ideas for Russian use in the early twentieth century. Her interest in progressive education was shared within her family: her husband, the linguist and scholar Viktor Fausek, was similarly committed to modern methods of teaching and to the broader intellectual currents of their time. Together they belonged to a circle of educators and scientists who believed in reforming childhood education through careful observation, respect for the child s autonomy and a scientifically grounded understanding of development. The Fauseks raised their children within this atmosphere of pedagogical experimentation, and accounts from the period suggest that their home served as an informal laboratory for new educational ideas a place where languages, music and independent learning were encouraged from an early age. This personal engagement with progressive education lent Yulia Fausek s writing a distinctive authority: her interest was never purely theoretical, but grew out of practical experience and a genuine commitment to the intellectual and emotional flourishing of the child. This 1924 Petrograd edition is among the earliest Russian works to present the Montessori system in a structured and accessible way. Fausek offers a clear exposition of the method s philosophical foundations the cultivation of independence, sensory refinement and purposeful activity while also providing practical guidance on the materials, classroom organisation and the teacher s role as a calm, observant facilitator. She addresses the particular challenges of implementing Montessori education in Russian schools and kindergartens, making the volume an invaluable document of early Soviet educational experimentation. Works on the Montessori method from the early 1920s are now uncommon, as official Soviet policy soon shifted towards other pedagogical frameworks. This edition is therefore especially appealing to collectors of educational history and to scholars interested in the transmission and transformation of Western pedagogical theory in Russia during a period of rapid social and intellectual change. The son of Yulia Fausek, Nikolai Viktorovich Fausek (1894 1938), was an early Russian aviator who flew reconnaissance missions during the First World War and later contributed to Soviet aviation as both a pilot and an instructor. In 1938 he became a victim of political repression, a fate shared by many figures of his generation. No cover, otherwise fine.…
