A propos de cet article

Schwann: xx, 228 pp, 4 plates; Schleiden: pp. 229-268, 2 plates. Original green cloth. Corners of front cover very slightly worn. Indentation in vertical edge of the rear cover. Some plates have light foxing along the blank margins. Nevertheless, I have no hesitation in describing this as a very nice, Near Fine copy. First Editions in English. In this work Schwann discarded Schleiden's Uhrglastheorie and put forward a theory of his own. In the same work he described the neurilemma, the 'sheath of Schwann'. . . . English translation (Sydenham Society), 1847 [offered here]." Schleiden: Garrison-Morton 112 (citing 1st German ed., 1838, of Beiträge zur Phytogenesis. Arch. Anat. Physiol. wiss. Med., 137-76., 1838): "Schleiden demonstrated that plant tissues are made up of and developed from groups of cells, of which he recognized the 'cytoblast' or cell-nucleus. He observed with great accuracy certain other activities of cells, and is an important figure in the development of the cell theory. . . . English translation (Sydenham Society) 1847.".…
