AUTHOR: Seán O'Faoláin (1900-1991) was a towering figure in 20th-century Irish letters, celebrated as a master of the short story and a sophisticated commentator on the complexities of post-revolutionary Irish life. Born John Francis Whelan in Cork, he fought in the Irish War of Independence and the Civil War, experiences that profoundly shaped his scepticism toward romantic nationalism.
