ESTC Ti09466, T109464; vide T109465; Lowndes, 871: "First edition." Michael Geddes was educated at Edinburgh and Oxford during the 1670s, and became a cleric in the Episcopal church. He spent some time as chaplain to English workers in Portugal until the Inquisition objected to his presence, and on his return to England was made chancellor of the church in Salisbury. He published several works on church history, including these three volumes, which are based on documents he acquired during his time in Portugal (DNB). The publisher and bookseller Awnsham Churchill and his brother John were active in London from 1681 to 1728. Three volumes. First edition. 8vo., 18.5cm. The First Edition, in 3 volumes, [ii],478 & [viii],424 & [viii],[i](Errata), 32, 2, 33-56, [61, 84, 66, [4], 170, [4], 116, 26, [4], 34. Signatures: A2, B-2H8?, A4, B-2D8, 2E4; A4, B-C8, *, D-208. in contemporary full speckled calf, real raised bands, gilt border and flora decorations in the panels, dark crimson leather labels, the boards in panels (full and speckled) with blind decorated corner device decorations, some slight wear on the outer hinges but sound, small armorial bookplates, very good to fine sound set in attractive contemporary calf binding.
