A propos de cet article

Josephine Bunkley (1834–?) was born in Maryland to Episcopalian parents, but converted to Catholicism early in life. As a young woman, she joined the Sisters of Charity, headquartered in nearby Emmettsburg. She quickly grew disillusioned with religious life, due to ill-treatment by the sisters. Despite pressure from the Mother Superior, she eventually left St. Johns, and, in need of income, accepted an offer from Dewitt & Davenport to publish her story. Dewitt & Davenport secured two ghostwriters, Charles Beare and Mary Jane Stith Upshur, who expanded, revised, and exaggerated Bunkley’s account substantially. Upon reading the completed work, Bunkley (still professing Catholic faith) was mortified to find her reform-minded critiques of the Sisterhood transformed into sensationalized, nativistic anti-Catholic propaganda. She and Dewitt & Davenport entered a protracted legal dispute, during which the publisher argued that their extensive changes to Bunkley’s memoir precluded her from authorial rights. Bunkley won the suit, but Dewitt and Davenport were nevertheless able to circulate a limited run which they had already printed. The copyright was then sold to Harper & Brothers, who produced a larger (the present) edition. Octavo. xii, 338 + [10 publisher’s ads] pp. Engraved frontispiece + three pages of diagrams. Brown publisher’s embossed cloth, bearing the Harpers imprint on front and back boards. Gilt title on spine, slightly faded, worn. Pale yellow coated endpapers. Pencil signatures of previous owners (one dated 1859). Light foxing throughout. Middle gatherings somewhat loose. A good copy. First edition of the Harpers printing, preceded by an unauthorized run from Dewitt & Davenport. From the prefatory “Advertisement”: “The history of this book is almost as remarkable as that of its subject. Shortly after Miss Bunkley had escaped from St. Joseph’s in the manner she has stated in her narrative, the Superior of that convent published a defamatory letter against her. This decided Miss Bunkley not only to defend herself, but also to give an exhibition of convent life, as it had come under her observation, for the information and warning of her American countrymen Wright 419.
