There is something savouring of immodesty in the title, because mosaic implies something beautiful, but the sole point of comprasion lies in the fact that it has been finished bit by bit. There is a sort of rough chronological sequence about these sketches- not without sundry dislocations, All my years in Ceylon were spent among the Tamils-the first five in Tamil-land, the last four in the Sinhalese country
