Original full black morocco, ornate gilt frames to boards. Raised bands, gilt decor, and gilt lettering to spine. Gilt decor to board edges and turn-ins. Some rubbing to spine and board edges, with small (0.8cm) chip to fore-edge of front board and scuffing to bottom edges. Folio (25.5 x 39cm). All edges gilt. Pale yellow endpapers uncracked at gutters. Some discolouration to top rear endpaper. Bookplate in red & black to inside front board dated 1961. Tiny bookseller's stamp of Hannaford Bookseller Exeter to inside front board: Hannaford was also the publisher (in collaboration with Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans), so this is presumably the original publisher's binding. Title page printed in red & black. 5 plates, all with tissue guard. 2 gold & full-colour copies of medieval illuminations, 3 sepia and white illustrations of seals. Moderate foxing to plates and to early and late pages; scattered foxing throughout. Main text printed in double columns. Supplement to rear (published with the work; a later supplement was published in 1854). George Oliver, (1781-1861), Catholic priest and historian. Educated and trained at Stonyhurst, and ordained in 1806, in 1807 he was appointed to take charge of the chapel and formerly Jesuit mission at St Nicholas's Priory, Exeter, where he was to serve until 1851 and then live for a further 10 years in retirement. In addition to his missionary duties - '[h]is services during a cholera epidemic were long remembered' (ODNB) - George established himself as 'our great ecclesiastical antiquary' (Brushfield 1855, p. 286), producing a succession of what were to become standard antiquarian works, largely on the history of Devon. Without the additions represented by George's Monasticon and its supplements, 'the edition of Dugdale's 'Monasticon' by [Caley] Ellis and Bandinel must be considered incomplete' (DNB).
