A propos de cet article

Limited Edition of 500 copies, this copy No. 'TO142. Deluxe limited edition facsimile of the definitive 1854 second edition held in the Libraries of the British Museum (Natural History). Elephant folio (approx. 540mm x 370mm). Bound in the publisher's spectacular deep blue cloth with bold gilt lettering to the spine and the official British Museum gilt crest emblem stamped sharply to the upper board. Blind-ruled borders and beautifully patterned endpapers. 26 pp. text, list of plates, followed by a monumental suite of 52 vibrant, full-page colour plates with accompanying descriptive text, plus one black-and-white anatomical plate. Unlike standard modern reproductions, Hill House prepared these exact facsimiles directly from the British Museum originals without the use of a camera, utilising specialized 5 and 6-colour offset printing presses on heavy 130gsm matte art paper. The plates faithfully carry every magnificent nuance, brushstroke, and historical library stamp of the pristine original specimen. John Gould remains the undisputed master of 19th-century avian illustration, and this colossal volume brings his toucans to life with breathtaking fidelity. In Near Fine condition. Front pastedown is neatly stamped with the publisher's official limitation mark "TO142", designating this as copy number 142 of the limited printing. Features the small, elegant personal bookplate of renowned natural history collector Newell Peach to the front free endpaper. Outer blue cloth boards remain exceptionally clean and bright with very sharp corner tips and crisp gilt tooling with minimal rubbing to edges and a few faint scratches. Structurally immaculate, tight, and square. Internally, all text pages and the 52 colour plates are in near-pristine condition—clean, white, and crisp with virtually no handling wear, marks, or foxing. A premier, beautifully documented collector's copy with excellent provenance.…
