A propos de cet article

Blue cloth with bright gilt titling on spin, gilt shield on upper cover. Book plate on f. paste down. From introduction. "THE present survey describes the monuments topographically, beginning in the south transept and working north. The choir, churchyard and the mural monuments are described separately. The major problem in such a survey is the identification of the large number of mutilated monumental slabs and brass matrices remaining in the chapel. It has been possible, however, to identify with fair certainty all fifteen of the `college' monuments of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, now in the two transepts and under the tower, despite the fact that only four of them still have their inscriptions remaining.' The memorials to Loryng (No. 23A) and Person (No. 74) alone seem in question, for the present positions of the stones identified as theirs do not correspond with the locations given in earlier surveys. This is not, however, surprising, since nearly a quarter of the monuments now extant have been moved at various tunes from their original positions, for aesthetic reasons, or to make way for architectural alterations. Until the `gothic cleansing' of the nineteenth century, for example, the pillars of the crossing appear to have been decorated with the memorials of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century wardens and fellows.…
