Will Baker ranges in this volume as far east as the Nebraska plains, a land of supermarkets and superhighways where the West once began, and as far south as the canyons of Chihuahua and the cloud forests of Peru, places that still lie beyond "the frontier of our society and its way of life. In "The Winged Worm" he tells of a boys first trout, dreamed of at the sporting goods counter of a general store in Idaho and then yanked from a stream with help of a hook and some worms. "The Legend of Great Uncle Jim and the Woman behind It All" describes a search for part of the past, part of a blood heritage, as a professor flogs his Volvo across rugged Nevada roads to confirm the family legend of a great uncle's death a century ago in a violent brawl over a woman. And "Sourdoughs, Filibusters, and a One~Eared Mule" traces the history of gold mining in the Far West from the point of view of the desperate sourdoughs, the hustlers, and the filibustering dreamers who never did find El Dorado.
