Light wear to covers. Dustjacket: light scuffing to covers & light wear to top margins. ; 28 x 28 x 2.3 cms; 191 pages; Moving Toward the Light: Joseph Raffael is a 2015 monograph that surveys approximately 17 years of the artist s large-scale watercolour paintings. Featuring essays by Lanie Goodman, Betsy Dillard Stroud, and David Pagel, the book presents 88 richly coloured works created in Raffael s studio at his home in Cap d Antibes, France. Joseph Raffael, who studied under Josef Albers at Yale, is known for his luminous, intricate watercolours depicting flowers, koi ponds, birds, shells, and fossils subjects drawn from the natural environment surrounding his Mediterranean garden. His technique, often wet-into-wet, results in saturated, glowing compositions that evoke the depth of oil painting while remaining unmistakably fluid and alive with light. The book includes essays that provide context and depth to the images. Goodman offers a biographical overview, Stroud contributes a dialogue from one artist to another, and Pagel reflects philosophically on the meaning of beauty and the artist s lifelong dedication to capturing it. Raffael himself refers to these works as emerging from the "deepest waters of the Beauty Sea, " marking them as some of the most profound of his career. Many of the paintings featured are monumental in scale some as large as five by eight feet and fully immerse the viewer in a meditative exploration of colour, form, and the natural world. An accompanying exhibition at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery in 2015 highlighted these works, reinforcing how Raffael s surroundings and inner vision fuse in his art. In essence, Moving Toward the Light is both a visual celebration and an introspective meditation on the themes of beauty, light, and the power of nature. It positions Joseph Raffael as a master of contemporary realism and one of the most ambitious watercolourists of his time. N° de réf. du vendeur 63780
