A propos de cet article

The Mythology of Greece and Rome: With Special Reference to Its Use in Art, from the German of O. Seemann and edited by G. H. Bianchi, published in 1879 by Harper & Brothers, New York. An extensively illustrated nineteenth-century survey of Greek and Roman mythology, with particular attention to the ways in which gods, heroes, monsters, and mythological narratives were represented in ancient art and sculpture. Beginning with cosmogony and theogony and the earliest generations of the gods, the work proceeds through the Olympian deities—including Zeus, Hera, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hermes, and others—before exploring the secondary divinities, gods of the sea and waters, and deities of the earth and lower world. Among the numerous mythological beings and traditions discussed are the Sirens, Nymphs, Satyrs, Centaurs, Furies, Fates, Muses, river gods, sea divinities, and the inhabitants of the classical underworld, followed by the great heroic cycles surrounding Heracles, Perseus, Theseus, Jason and the Argonauts, the Trojan War, and Odysseus. Throughout, Seemann connects the myths with their visual iconography, discussing the attributes by which individual gods and mythological figures may be recognized and important surviving representations in classical art. A particularly appealing nineteenth-century reference for classical mythology, ancient religion, mythological symbolism, and the iconography of the Greek and Roman gods. Illustrated throughout. Hardcover with shelfwear to corners and ends and chipping to the head of the spine. …
