BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, xi, 197 pgs, frontis portrait, limited to 2500 copies. Wisconsin Historical Commission: Original Paper No. 7. Original tan parchment spine over paper covered boards, gilt titled cover and spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light cover soiling, spine darkened (as is usual with these publications by the Wisc. Hist. Comm.) Interior is clean and tight. With clear, mylar wrapper. Excellent collector's condition. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Julian Wisner Hinkley was born at Vernon, Connecticut. He served in the Waupun Light Guard for three months after April 1861. In May of 1861 the organization was accepted for the war, and it became E Company of the Third Wisconsin Infantry. Hinkley was elected as a First Sergeant; on February 6, 1862, later commissioned Second Lieutenant; and he became First Lieutenant the following November. In May 1863, he took command of the Company as Captain. For a few months before he was discharged at Madison on the twenty-sixth of August 1865, he served as acting Major of the Regiment. With the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry, Hinkley participated in many of the significant battles of the eastern theater of the war, including Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In August 1863, he was with the brigade went sent to quell the New York City draft riots. Following, the regiment was sent to Tennessee to reinforce Rosencran's Army in Chattanooga as part of the new XX Corps, Army of the Cumberland. They participated in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea. The 3rd Wisconsin was mustered out on July 18, 1865, in Louisville, Ky. The regiment is recognized as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments.
