First and only printing of Volume 4 of this Grey Walls Press anthology. Edited by Fred Marnau. Includes a wide range of contributions by authors and artists such as: Franz Kafka, Paul Eluard, Charles Baudelaire, Paul Potts, Georg Trakl, Naoum Gabo, Oskar Kokoschka, Hugh MacDiarmid, Federico Garcia Lorca, Nicholas Moore, David Gascoyne et al. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with copper titles to the spine. The titles are still beautifully bright, and the boards are clean and unmarked. Edges of boards just slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine, with no previous ownership inscriptions. The contents are clean and undamaged - just some offsetting to the endpapers and half-title. No foxing. No creases or tears to the thin paper. ***In a very good typographical printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's price of 10s. 6d. net and a 3/6 pencil price above. The dustwrapper is printed on thick paper and is virtually complete, with just some edge-wear and light creasing. The dustwrapper is clean and unfaded, with just some light browning to the spine. With an advert for Grey Walls Press on the back panel. ***206 pages. 222mm x 144mm. ***'The first issue of this anthology of European Art and Letters appeared in 1943. No. 4 contains poetry by Pierre Jean Jouve, Paul Eluard, Georg Trakl, John Heath-Stubbs, Hugh MacDiarmid, Nicholas Moore and David Wright. There is also a new translation of a poem by Lorca. Prose contributions include an article on Ignazio Silone by Paul Potts, "The Poetry of the Film" by Roger Manvell, a chapter from Ernst Jünger's "On the Marble Cliffs", and "A Little Anthology of Existential Thought" by David Gascoyne. The illustrations include reproductions of paintings by Oskar Kokoschka, Gregorio Prieto, Naoum Gabo, and Nora Lavrin, and a number of stills.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Charles Wrey Gardiner (1901 - 13 March 1981) was an English writer and poet, editor and publisher, born in Plymouth. Gardiner was a noted and well-connected literary figure, particularly in London in the years around Second World War, though very much in the tradition of the literary amateur. His significance in publishing came with his editorship of the magazine Poetry Quarterly. He became its assistant editor in 1939, with its first edition published in Spring 1940 and continuing until 1953. Towards the end of 1940 he established the Grey Walls Press, in Billericay, Essex. Grey Walls subsequently merged with Falcon Press, the publishing company run by Peter Baker MP. Initially, this gave the company new capital but it later involved Grey Walls in Baker's bankruptcy. "NEW ROAD - New Directions in Art & Writing" was a series of anthologies published by Grey Walls Press, the first two of which were edited by Alex Comfort and John Bayliss. These are: Volume 1 (1943) - Edited by Alex Comfort and John Bayliss - including a special 50-page surrealist section; Volume 2 (1944) - Edited by Alex Comfort and John Bayliss; Volume 3 (1945) - Edited by Fred Marnau; Volume 4 (1946) - Edited by Fred Marnau; Volume 5 (1949) - Edited by Charles Wrey Gardiner.' Includes work by a huge range of European writers and artists. Conditions d'expédition
For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging materials; any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only; for the UK, our standard rate is for first class, and the priority rate includes tracked (signed for) delivery; for International sales, our standard rate is for Airmail delivery, and the priority rate is for tracked (International signed for) delivery. We would prefer that you choose the priority rate (tracked option) for higher value books of say £50 or more. Please note that we will always reduce shipping fees where appropriate e.g. for smaller (lighter) books when we accept your order. For heavier books and sets etc. we will often 'soak up' the extra cost, but on occasion, we may need to charge more than the quoted shipping fee. However, customers will always have the option to either accept or decline the revised order amount. We will also reduce the overall shipping fee for multiple orders. We will endeavour to ship all books within two business days of receiving your order.
