A propos de cet article

A detailed, often daily, diary and eyewitness account of the first British diplomatic and trade embassy to China, led by Lord George Macartney at the end of the 18th century, recorded by Anderson, his valet. The mission, an attempt to open China to Western trade, was a failure in this objective, but the present account provides an invaluable first record of life in China at the time, rich with descriptions of Chinese court protocol, daily life and customs, dress, religion, food, housing and much more. The volume also provdes a full list of all who accompanied the mission, their ranks and assignments, and a brief Chinese vocabulary at the back. Also includes Appendix: Containing an Account of the Transactions of the Squadron During the Absence of the Embassy Till their Return on Board His Majesty's Ship, the Lion, at Wampoa - essentially the ship's daily log while exploring the south China coast, from Chusan (Zhoushan) to Canton (Guangzhou) over the period Aug. 5th, 1793 to Jan. 9th, 1794. Recent rebinding in full calf, including original marbled FEPs. Pages browned to some degree but all still sound, unmarked and fully legible. Names of three former owners on front endpapers. xxiv, 328 pp. Size: 18 x 12 cm. …
