A propos de cet article

First edition, first printing, of an early and important study of African American labour and economic history. Covering the development of Black workers in the United States from the late nineteenth century onwards, Greene and Woodson examine their participation in agriculture, industry, and a range of urban occupations, while documenting the effects of racial discrimination, segregation, and economic exploitation. The work also emphasises the adaptability and agency of African American workers and the significance of their labour to the wider development of the American economy. Carter G. Woodson (1875 - 1950), the pioneering historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, was the leading Black historian of his generation and established Negro History Week, the forerunner of Black History Month. Lorenzo J. Greene (1899 - 1988), who worked closely with Woodson, subsequently became a distinguished professor and historian. Of particular bibliographical interest is the striking dust-jacket design by James Lesesne Wells (1902 - 1993), an important Harlem Renaissance printmaker who had recently joined the faculty of Howard University. The book thus represents a notable collaboration between Black scholars, a Black publishing institution, and a prominent Black artist. Octavo (22.6 x 15.0 cm). XIII, 388 pages. Original green cloth, near-fine and remarkably well preserved. The scarce illustrated dust jacket is very good or better and unusually well intact, with only a small chip at the spine, affecting part of one author's surname. The jacket artwork remains vivid and remarkably fresh, with the usual light toning to the spine and, to a lesser extent, the edges. The jacket is now protected in an archival-quality Brodart cover. An exceptionally attractive copy. Copies retaining Wells's original jacket design are scarce.…
