Driven by the shift in emphasis toward services rather than manufactured goods, industrial composition and jobs in the 14 large metropolitan economies in the USA which are examined here are shown to have changed dramatically since 1970. Nevertheless, although becoming more specialized in high-level services, the central cities have continued to be the focal point of economic activity within the metropolis, with the average job yielding higher earnings. The book closes with a critical review of policy alternatives that might increase access to employment in both the central cities and suburbs.
