Arnold retaining original price ($2.50); [10],275pp. Jacket rather rubbed and worn at margins, a number of closed tears to upper panel with old tape repair (offsetting to endpapers), corners bumped and textblock uniformly toned; About Very Good overall. The author's first book, a nightmarish portrait of a traveling carnival and its inhabitants, a sort of reverse American success story "Written with a casual and contemptuous dispassion" (rear jacket panel).
