A propos de cet article

First edition of this uncommon and important study of Japanese lighting, published in Tokyo in 1974 by the Yamagiwa Lighting Design Foundation. Nihon no Akari ("The Light of Japan") examines the history, forms, and cultural significance of illumination in Japan, documenting a subject that was at the time little known outside the country. Of particular significance is the book?s connection with the seminal exhibition "Akari. Lampen aus Japan", held at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Zurich in 1975. The exhibition played an important role in introducing Japanese lighting culture to a Western audience, and Nihon no Akari was the only publication specifically cited as a reference on the subject in the exhibition catalogue. As such, the present volume provides an especially valuable contemporary source for understanding the historical and aesthetic context in which Japanese lighting was first presented to the West as a distinct field of cultural and design history. Published by Shimauma Shobo and issued by the Yamagiwa Lighting Design Foundation, the book brings together traditional Japanese approaches to illumination with the concerns of modern lighting design, making it a significant document of the meeting of Japanese tradition and post-war international design culture. Quarto (33,5 x 25,5 cm). Text in Japanese. Profusely illustrated with numerous colour and black-and-white photographs. Original publisher's black cloth with title in silver to front cover and spine. Housed in the publisher's illustrated slipcase. Comes with the original shipping box. A fine copy, of this definitive reference work at the intersection of Japanese craft, lighting design, and the international reception of Japanese aesthetics.…
