A propos de cet article

Cloth-backed boards, wrappers bound in at end, small 4to, 26 cm, viii, 228 pp, tables. From John Feather's 'A Dictionary of Book History': "Our principal source of information about the existence and operation of the congers in their early years is from a financial notebook kept by two members of the wholesaling conger, Thomas Bennet and Henry Clements, from 1686 to 1719. This is now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford (MS. Eng. misc. d. 988).This manuscript formed the basis of the standard work on the subject: Norma Hodgson and Cyprian Blagden. The Notebook of Thomas Bennet and Henry Clements (1686-1719) with Some Aspects of Book Trade Practice (OBS, new scr., 6, 1956). " From the Introduction: " It has not here been attempted to reprint the book as it stands. The contents have instead been assembled under three main heads, each with an introduction and discussion. Bennet’s foreign correspondence, consisting of copies of his outgoing letters to booksellers in Holland, France, and Germany, forms the first distinct group and is here printed in full (Chapter II) with the exception of a few pages of accounts. . The second group, in which by far the strongest interest is concentrated, is dealt with in Chapter III,‘The Trade in London’. Of this the first section describes the three ways in which booksellers replenished their stocks by wholesale purchase — through the organization called the Conger, through subscriptions, and through auctions " the records of the purchases which Bennet and Clements made in these ways having been re-sorted from the chronological and shorthand form of the original into a single alphabetical list (Appendix 5). Opportunity has been taken to describe, in the second part of this chapter, other kinds of Congers which flourished at the same time or later. The third and last group, dealt with in Chapter IV, consists of miscellaneous entries, including some rough memoranda of the costs of publishing three works.". Some spotting to edges, otherwise Very Good. …
