A propos de cet article

Description :

First edition, House issue. 2 folding maps and 67 plates (including 3 plans). 614pp. 1 vols. 8vo. "Less than a month after war with Mexico had been officially declared by President James Polk, Lieutenant William Emory, Maryland gentleman, scholar and scientist, explorer and soldier, entered the saga of the West as the official reporter of the march of the Army of the West and the surveys of the topographical engineers assigned to its commander, Stephen Kearny" (Westward, 189). "The War with Mexico enormously stimulated the production of maps depicting that country and its borderlands… Of the greatest interest and importance is the cartographic contribution resulting from the march of U.S. Army forces into the American Southwest, and thence to the Pacific… The route continued fairly well known on to Santa Fe. Beyond that point it was through virtually unexplored country… no officer of the Corps had ever been south of the Colorado River. It was the task of Emory and his companions to map this southern route to the Pacific" (Wheat III:3-8). This issue of the Emory report also includes the reports of J.W. Abert and Philip St. George Cooke. Together the three summarize the activity of the U.S. Army to the west of Santa Fe after the capture of New Mexico by the Army of the West. This issue of the Emory report does not contain his large map, but two distinct and important smaller ones. The first is Philip St. George Cooke's "Sketch of Part of the march & wagon road of Lt. Colonel Cooke, from Santa Fe to the Pacific Ocean, 1846-7." This shows the route of the Mormon Battalion from Santa Fe to the Gila River. The other, "Map of the Territory of New Mexico," was compiled by lieutenants Abert and Peck after the conquest of New Mexico. Both are important contributions to western cartography. Abert's report includes material on the Indians of New Mexico and their languages. "A library of Western Americana is incomplete without it" (Zamorano 80). Wheat Transmississippi 505,532; Wagner-Camp 148:5; Zamorano 80, 33; Pilling 1207; Cowan p.195; Graff 1249; Hill, p.299; Howes E145 Modern morocco backed cloth. Minor staining, repaired tears to folding maps. Inked stamp on title 2 folding maps and 67 plates (including 3 plans). 614pp. 1 vols. 8vo. N° de réf. du vendeur 369462
