A propos de cet article

First Edition. Octavo (8vo), pp. xxiv, 444. Publisher's original red cloth binding with blind-stamped decorative borders to the boards and gilt titles to the spine. Important Association & Provenance Copy: Features a neat, contemporary ink ownership signature to the front free endpaper reading: "C. Drayton Thomas, 1919." Reverend Charles Drayton Thomas (1867–1953) was a prominent British minister, author, and a legendary leading member of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR), renowned for his empirical parapsychological investigations into survival after death and mental mediumship. Notably, the 1919 date corresponds directly with the period Thomas was formulating his famous "book and newspaper tests" to detect discarnate communication. Directly above the signature is a crisp, early circular ink stamp bearing the acronym 'A.S..A.P.', denoting a compelling provenance linked to an early psychical research library collection—likely the historic Assembly of Scientific and Applied Psychologists or a related early psychical research society. A completely unrestored Fair to Good copy. The original red cloth is heavily sunned/faded showing expected historical chipping and rubbing to the spine tail, alongside heavier chipping and tearing to the head of the spine resulting in minor loss to the top-left shoulder. Internally, the binding hinges are somewhat weak, with a distinct structural crack between pages 112 and 113 that exposes the underlying binding webbing. Despite the structural loosening, the text block remains complete. The individual pages are remarkably clean, crisp, and bright throughout, showing only occasional light spots of natural foxing and minor vintage fingermarks to the margins. A monumental and highly scarce artifact of the mid-Victorian Occult Revival. Written by the prominent London physician and Zoist contributor Dr John Ashburner, this work serves as an elaborate, passionate treatise attempting to reconcile the mechanics of mesmeric animal magnetism with spiritual mediumship, cosmic forces, and traditional Christian theology. Infused with bizarre case studies where the author treats chronic physical ailments (such as gout, scrofula, and bronchitis) using clairvoyant tracking and mesmeric passes. A highly important association copy with exceptional provenance.…
