Head- tailpieces. 4to: A^2 B - E^4 F^2. 7-1/4" x 5-3/4" The Great Fire of London was a major conflagration that swept through the central parts of the English city of London, starting at the bakery of Thomas Farriner (or Farynor) on Pudding Lane shortly after midnight, and raged from Sunday, 2 September to Wednesday, 5 September 1666. The fire gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman city wall. It threatened, but did not reach, the aristocratic district of Westminster, Charles II's Palace of Whitehall, and most of the suburban slums. It consumed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St Paul's Cathedral and most of the buildings of the City authorities. It is estimated to have destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's 80,000 inhabitants. The death toll is unknown but traditionally thought to have been small, as only six verified deaths were recorded, however, the social and economic problems created by the disaster were overwhelming. This anonymous author examines the aftermath of the fire, and enumerates 8 specific cause factors for the inferno, i.e., "everyone may be the author of his own fortune", "it did happen, to wit, about one of the clock in the night, when every one is buried in his sleep", "the narrowness of the place", "the weakness of the buildings, which were almost all of wood", "The quantity of combustible and bituminous matter hath given the greates encouragement to this devouring Fire", "The foregoing summer was extraordinarily hot and dry", "In cometh now the East-wind to play his part in this Tragedy" & "the Thames Water-house was out of order". An amazingly spot-on topical analysis of the fire's causal factors, omitting only the delayed response by the Lord Mayor. Uncommon on the market, we note ABPC shows just one copy to auction in the last 30+ years [2006]. Binding - Nr Fine. Bookplate of Walter Flinn to front paste-down.
