Odysseus' reliance on his wit & wiliness for survival in his encounters w/ divine & natural forces is at once the human story & an individual test of moral endurance. In the myths & legends that are magnificently retold here, Fagles has captured the energy & poetry of Homer's original in a bold, contemporary idiom & given us an Odyssey to read aloud, to savor & to treasure for its sheer lyrical mastery. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox's superb introduction & textual commentary provide new insights & background information for the general reader & scholar, intensifying the strength of Fagles' translation. This is an Odyssey to delight both the classicist & the public at large, & to captivate a new generation of Homer's students. HIGHEST PRAISE: "Fagles' 'Odyssey' is a splendid companion piece to his memorable English version of the 'Iliad'. He has managed to create a poetic style that combines the pungency of modern colloquial English w/ a timeless dignity. The sensory values of Odysseus' archaic world, the snap of sails, the scud of sea-foam & the gleam of burnished bronze come wonderfully alive in this supple, rhythmic English" - Robert Alter, University of California, Berkeley * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: ROBERT FAGLES, the winner of the PEN-Ralph Mannheim Medal for Translation & an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, is Arthur W. Marks '19 Professor of Comparative Literature, Emeritus, at Princeton University & received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Yale University. @IthacaStateOfMind Uh oh. This cave is a giant’s lair. He has a taste for cheese, and my companions. He also has only one eye. Trying to keep from laughing.
Got him drunk. Put a hot poker in his ONE EYE when he blacked out. That will show him – if he could see. LOL. Time to leave.
Damn. Poseidon pissed. How was I supposed to know One-Eye was his son? What Olympian whore did he sleep with to get an issue like that?

À propos de l’auteur
Homer was probably born around 725BC on the Coast of Asia Minor, now the coast of Turkey, but then really a part of Greece. Homer was the first Greek writer whose work survives.
He was one of a long line of bards, or poets, who worked in the oral tradition. Homer and other bards of the time could recite, or chant, long epic poems. Both works attributed to Homer – the Iliad and the Odyssey – are over ten thousand lines long in the original. Homer must have had an amazing memory but was helped by the formulaic poetry style of the time.
In the Iliad Homer sang of death and glory, of a few days in the struggle between the Greeks and the Trojans. Mortal men played out their fate under the gaze of the gods. The Odyssey is the original collection of tall traveller’s tales. Odysseus, on his way home from the Trojan War, encounters all kinds of marvels from one-eyed giants to witches and beautiful temptresses. His adventures are many and memorable before he gets back to Ithaca and his faithful wife Penelope.
We can never be certain that both these stories belonged to Homer. In fact ‘Homer’ may not be a real name but a kind of nickname meaning perhaps ‘the hostage’ or ‘the blind one’. Whatever the truth of their origin, the two stories, developed around three thousand years ago, may well still be read in three thousand years’ time.
