A propos de cet article

In Latin, with a lengthy introduction in English. 1919 first edition thus, Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (London), 5 x 7 3/8 inches tall green embossed cloth hardbound in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, blind embossed lettering to front cover, gilt lettering to spine, frontispiece and two other plates with images from the original 14th century manuscripts, index, 97 pp. Slight rubbing and edgewear to covers, with bumping to all four tips. A bit of residue to the lower spine where a label was removed. Inside, a clean, bright, unmarked copy of this uncommon first edition, in a soiled, chipped and edgeworn dust jacket which has a two-inch closed tear to the top edge of the front cover, chipping to the upper spine and tape to the lower spine but is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~K~ A historical text composed in the late 14th century to promote the canonization of the English mystic Richard Rolle (1300-1349). The Officium is the liturgical office written for Rolle's feast day, which was January 20. The Miracula is a collection of miracles that occurred through Rolle's intercession. As a hagiographical text, it is written in the literary tradition of saints' lives and uses language intended to convey the special nature of Rolle's work. Because it was composed for an advocacy purpose, historical studies note that the text likely contains elements that exaggerate or distort aspects of Rolle's life. Nevertheless, it is the primary historical source for researchers attempting to reconstruct an outline of his life. Rolle was an English religious writer, Bible translator, and hermit. He is also known as Richard Rolle of Hampole or de Hampole, since after years of wandering he settled near the Cistercian nunnery in Hampole, Yorkshire. Rolle probably began writing in the early 1330s, and continued until his death - but there is no certain chronology of his various works. He wrote in both Latin and English, with his English works apparently all dating from after circa 1340. Rolle's works were widely read in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, more so even than Chaucer. Works of his survive in about 470 manuscripts written between 1390 and 1500, and in 10 sixteenth and early-seventeenth century printed editions (including the sixteenth-century edition by Wynkyn de Worde).…
