A well-preserved first edition of this increasingly collected royal children’s book. The book A comic Highland fantasy set around Lochnagar and Balmoral. An old man living in a cave by the loch attempts to climb the cliff, is launched into the air by an enormous sneeze, is carried off by a “pig-eagle”, meets the Gorms, and eventually decides that London can wait. The story began as a tale told by the then Prince of Wales to his younger brothers, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, during a voyage on HMY Britannia. It was first published in November 1980. Later adaptations include a 1993 BBC animated short (narrated by Prince Charles, with Robbie Coltrane as the old man), a Jackanory reading, and a National Youth Ballet production. The author Written by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (born 1948), later King Charles III. This is his only children’s book. It reflects his long attachment to Balmoral, the Scottish landscape, and a lightly satirical, inventive humour. Publication in aid of his charities made the book both a royal souvenir and a period piece of early-1980s children’s publishing. The illustrator Sir Hugh Maxwell Casson K.C.V.O. (1910–1999), architect, interior designer, watercolourist and President of the Royal Academy (1976–1984). Director of Architecture for the 1951 Festival of Britain; knighted 1952; KCVO 1978. A close friend of the Royal Family, he designed interiors for the Royal Yacht Britannia and is often credited with encouraging Prince Charles’s interest in watercolour. His loose, witty Highland scenes — tartan knickerbockers, grouse, eagles, caves and Balmoral glimpsed from the air — give the book its distinctive look. Casson also illustrated Betjeman and published several of his own sketchbooks of London, Oxford and Cambridge. Bibliographic note First UK edition. Later reprints and a Puffin paperback exist; this is the original Hamish Hamilton hardcover in the matching pictorial jacket. Copies with the 1980 first-issue jacket remain the most sought-after form of the book. A scarce and attractive first edition of the future King’s only children’s book, illustrated by the President of the Royal Academy, in the original dust jacket.…
