Item description from seller

Text in English. This is the first English language edition. Translated from the German by L. Hamilton. Published in 1922 by Ernst Wasmuth, Berlin. Printed and presumed bound in Germany. 11.75 x 9.25 inches. Cinnamon-colored cloth hardboards, with somewhat faded gilt-stamped title and author name to the spine. Moderately bumped and abraded spine head and tail and corners. Boards rubbed and faded here and there. Text block firmly bound in. Green pastedowns and FEPs; note that the front FEP is present but detached. With 32 numbered pages, including author preface and plate descriptions. Followed by 128 full page, full color plates. No missing plates. The colors of the plates remain vibrant. White remnant of a tiny paper label, 1 square inch, to base of spine; else no hint at all that the book may have come from a library. Slight to moderate age toning at the page extremities. No stains, stampings or underlining found. A Good Plus copy. Very scarce in any condition. 5 lbs. 5 oz. weight. The plates depict traditional ethnic clothing, both ornamental, ceremonial and everyday, from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, the Sudan, Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Persia, Afghanistan, India, Tibet, China, Japan, Middle East, Asia and North Africa. "Max Karl Tilke (1869 - 1942) was a German costume designer, ethnographer, historian of fashion design, illustrator, Kabarett artist, and painter of the Weimar Republic. Tilke's talent, his wide range of activity, and his exquisite workmanship secure for him a pre-eminent place among artists and ethnographers alike. Additionally, as the years pass, these works take on an added value. As examples of ethnic costume are less and less frequently seen, and as more and more people forsake their national dress for westernized clothing and costume, these paintings stand as a record and a testament to a bygone, more colorful time." Also published in French in 1922 as Le Costume en Orient, through Chez Gaston Hue, dépositaire, Paris.

Description de la boutique

Welcome to the books platform of Marc Sena Carrel. I operated a professional book business between 2003 and 2017 in the San Francisco Bay Area, including via AbeBooks, and I am now a private party selling off fine books from my personal collection. I carry a choice selection of books, prints and ephemera for the discriminating customer. I focus on scholarly and antiquarian books, with a special emphasis on art books. From time to time I also offer original prints, including but not limited to antique Japanese ukiyo-e prints. Additionally I go in for occasional ephemera. Currently on offer via Abebooks are select titles. My selection is more eclectic and off the beaten path than mainstream and predictable. Please e-mail me at marcsenacarrel@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns. I will be happy to be of service. Thank you.
