First edition in English of the author's debut novel, a landmark contribution to the literature of alienation and the absurd in the post-war world. Translated from L'Étranger (1942), this English version was made by Stuart Gilbert, a British scholar who was a friend of James Joyce. It also includes an introduction by Cyril Connolly. This London edition was published in January 1946 and precedes the New York edition, published by Knopf in April as The Stranger. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket designed by Edward Bawden. Fading to spine, spots to edges; jacket spine toned, panels bright, small chips to ends and corners, unclipped: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
