A propos de cet article

First printing of the true first edition - recommended by the Book Society. With attractive black and white chapter-head wood-engravings and dark red wood-engraving vignette to the title-page by Reynolds Stone. With a two-page foreword by the author. ***Very good in green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, and gilt facsimile signature of the author to the front board. The boards are clean, but with some light shadowing from the titles and design of the dustwrapper to the spine and front board. Edges of boards faded. No creases or bumps. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean, just slightly darkened to the top edge. Internally also very good, with a neat period gift inscription in ink on the front free endpaper: " 'Vera, Hoping this will open a "charmed magic casement for you" with love, Joan". Very small contemporaneous gilt printed bookseller's label to the bottom of the front paste-down 'Books & Careers 84 Victoria Street, London SW1'. Interior pages clean. No foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a good but incomplete green printed price-clipped dustwrapper, which has large chips and associated tears and creases to the edges. Large chips to the head and tail of the spine, and edges. Large chip also to lower portion of the spine. Very slight fading to the spine colour. (please see scans) ***x prelim-pages plus 169 text-pages. 204mm x 138mm. ***'Dame Freya Madeline Stark DBE (31 Jan 1893 - 9 May 1993) was a British-Italian explorer and travel writer. She wrote more than two dozen books on her travels in the Middle East and Afghanistan as well as several autobiographical works and essays. She was one of the first non-Arabs known to travel through the southern Arabian Desert in modern times.' (Wiki) ***'Freya Stark has become one of the few outstanding travel writers of our time. By her vivid accounts of travel in Persia, Arabia and the Near East her many readers have themselves become travellers-at-heart. Her new book is a more personal and a more individual kind of book. It deals with a different kind of journey - one for which her experiences may in some measure equip her as a guide - and one which we are all travellers.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First printing of the true first edition, in its original fragile dustwrapper (defective) with attractive wood-engraving chapter-heads by Reynolds Stone. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. …
