First UK edition - first impression. This novel was first published in the USA as "B. F.'s Daughter" by Boston, Little Brown in 1946, but was retitled as "Polly Fulton" for the British edition, published here by Robert Hale. The British edition is scarcer than the American edition, and very hard to find in the original dustwrapper. Published to 'Book Production War Economy Standard' as stated on the printer's page. ***Very good in crimson cloth-covered boards. the boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No fading, even to the spine colour. Page block edges lightly foxed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with no previous ownership inscriptions - just some light pencil marks by a previous booksellers. Some light foxing to extreme margins of some pages. No creases or tears to the thin paper. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, but which has a printed publisher's price of 12/6 net below the inked out original price of 10/6. The thin dustwrapper is remarkably complete, with some light rubbing and creasing at the edges and corners, especially at the head and tail of the spine. The large foldover flaps are virtually uncreased. Small scuff to the surface of the bottom of the back panel where a sticker has been removed, otherwise nice clean condition - just lightly faded at the spine. ***190mm x 130mm. 384 printed pages. ***'This is the first novel by Mr. Marquand in which the woman is the protagonist. It is a comedy of manners covering contemporaneously and in retrospect a period of thirty years.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A major American novelist and satirist, John Phillips Marquand won the Pulitzer prize for the novel "The Late George Apley". ***'John Phillips Marquand (Nov 10, 1893 - Jul 16, 1960) was an American writer. Originally best known for his Mr. Moto spy stories, he achieved popular success and critical respect for his satirical novels, winning a Pulitzer Prize for "The Late George Apley" in 1938. One of his abiding themes was the confining nature of life in America's upper class and among those who aspired to join it. Marquand treated those whose lives were bound by these unwritten codes with a characteristic mix of respect and satire.' (Wiki) ***The first UK edition is very uncommon, especially in a complete original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.…
