Item description from seller

A Very Good Book, Rebound in a Modern, Functional Binding. Ownership inscription of Abhayananda [Born Marie Louise] to title page. Light rubbing present to crown and tail. Text block is moderately toned. Various, unobtrusive foxing throughout. A few leaves show evidence of dog earing, several others with neat underlining. Binding is tight and square. Collated complete, page 205 incorrectly printed as "305". Hardcover. Small Octavo. [xvi], [1], 2-247pp. + [4 Advertisements]. An important work in its own right, this copy is enhanced by an exceptional ownership signature. La Roy Sunderland (1804-1885) was a New England minister once of the Methodist Episcopal Church who went on to be a founder of the Wesleyan Methodist Church because of the M.E.C.'s continued tolerance of slavery. Sunderland was a staunch and vocal abolitionist, being frequently reprimanded by the M.E.C. for sowing division within the church. Sunderland's work on Pathetism and Mesmerism gained him further notoriety & renown. Abhayananda [Born Marie Louise] signed her name as such to the title page. She took the name in 1895 upon being initiated as the first western or American woman swami monk. She was initiated by her then teacher, the famed Vivekananda. Abhayananda was a suffragette, her enthusiasm for the movement tempered only by her dismissal of the concept of "rights" informed by her active anarchism. Her work eventually took her to India where she was active in relief and charitable endeavors. . Rebound in Quarter Faux-Brown Leather over Textured Black Boards, Black Spine Label with Gilt Detailing, Marbled Endpapers.
