A propos de cet article

First editions. Two separately paginated works bound as one, 336 and 64 pages respectively. The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's dark brown cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in gilt and blind, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed, the extremities are bumped, with some small chips and tears to the cloth at the spine ends. The text block is age toned, slightly marked and foxed, with cracking at points, there is a closed tear to the fore-edge of page 131/132 which has been inadvisedly repaired with a strip of tape, and page 109 is very browned as though a newspaper cutting has been left against it for some time. With an interesting chain of provenance: most recently from the library of notable parapsychologist and paranormal investigator, Alan Gauld (1932-2024), with his small bookplate to the front pastedown and neatly written ink ownership inscription to the front endpaper, indicating that he purchased the book in September 1990; prior to that by The Greater World Association, a Christian spiritualist organisation, with roughly 7 of their ink stamps appearing throughout indicating that the book lived at 3, Lansdowne Road in London, and prior to that from the library of T. J. Ring, with his large bookplate to the front pastedown, above which an ancient bookseller's description has been pasted, presumably from the purchase by Ring. An attempt at a serious scientific explanation of supernatural phenomena, taking the approach that the phenomena themselves are real, but that they are due to as yet undiscovered forces, rather than an indication of the presence of spirits or other occult agencies. Uncommon, and this copy with good provenance.…
