A propos de cet article

Imprint details neatly inked in the lower margin, no other copy located of this elegantly engraved aide memoire for young officers. Egerton also published Hackett's more extensive Explanation of the Review Manoeuvres of a Regiment of Cavalry, "A New Edition" 1819, recorded in a single copy at the National Library of Scotland. "The drill practised at a review inevitably followed an established sequence. First the regiments formed battalion line and proceeded to go through long, slow manual exercise. This was followed by the simple evolutions, and next came the firings by platoons and other divisions. Finally, the regiment would proceed to a display of the more commonplace of its complicated repertoire of manoeuvres. In order to carry off these performances it is clear that a great deal of hard practice had to go on during those limited periods when a few grand-divisions or squadrons had found themselves in concentration in the months preceding reviews; and even more intensive drilling had to be gone through during the weeks in review quarters. It is therefore understandable that some parts of the performances put on by regiments were often less than perfect, just as the generally good overall proficiency displayed at reviews reflects extremely well on the industry of the officers and NCOs" (Houlding p. 303). This cleverly condensed visual aid would have been of great help in committing those more complex evolutions to memory. The title page of a later similar study, A Selection of Movements from the Cavalry Regulations, generally intended as Practical Illustrations for Young Officers, particularly for the Hon. East India Company's Troops; and the Yeomanry Cavalry of Great Britain, Exeter, 1832, gives an outline of Hackett's wide-ranging career, "Formerly Captain and Adjutant of the 4th East York Local Militia; Adjutant of the Cavalry Depot at Maidstone; Adjutant of the 17th and 22nd Light Dragoons; and late Major of Brigade to the Cavalry of the Reserve Division of the Army of the Deccan". Fortescue's History of the 17th Lancers records him as lieutenant and adjutant in both 1815 and 1816, but otherwise little information is forthcoming regarding the detail of his career. Evidently, in the last-mentioned posting he would have seen service in the Third Anglo-Maratha War. J. A. Houlding, Fit for Service: The Training of the British Army, 1715-1795, 1981. Folding engraved schematic with hand colour (folded 162 x 100 mm; open 395 x 643 mm). Dissected into 16 panels and mounted on linen, very dark reddish purple Papier Tourniquet panels mounted as wraps. A little rubbed on the wraps with paper loss, pale toning to the plan, but overall very good.…
