First edition in English, and the first appearance of Dostoevsky in English. This is the third title in John Lane's Keynote Series. Aubrey Beardsley designed the covers and title page. The novel was first published in Russian in 1846. The translator Lena Milman (1862-1914) was an architectural historian and literary critic known to Lane through her contributions to The Yellow Book. She was close friends with Thomas Hardy, Henry James, and George Moore, acting as "a sounding board for his aesthetic theories" (Gerber, p. 97).
