Item description from seller

A charming early copy of The Tale of Tom Kitten, one of Beatrix Potter’s most beloved works, first published in 1907. This example carries a contemporary gift inscription alongside a pencil reference to Hill Top Farm, Potter’s home in Near Sawrey, the real-world setting that inspired many of her stories. While not authorial, the association adds a subtle but appealing contextual link to Potter’s life and creative environment. A classic Edwardian children’s book, preserved with its original illustrations and period character, reflecting its life as a well-loved gift over a century ago. Small square format. Original grey-green paper boards with mounted colour illustration to upper cover. Light general wear, rubbing to extremities, but overall a well-preserved example. Internally clean and complete. Colour illustrations present throughout, including full-page plates and text illustrations. Gift inscription to front endpaper reading “Annie from Auntie Dora.” Pencil note dated 1907. Dedication page with additional contemporary pencil inscription “Hill Top Farm,” referencing Potter’s well-known property in Near Sawrey, Cumbria. A highly appealing early copy with period inscriptions. Collation Bibliography; First edition, first printing of The Tale of Tom Kitten, published 1907. Complete with colour plates and illustrations throughout as issued. Published by Frederick Warne and Co, London and New York. Why This Matters; The Tale of Tom Kitten is one of the central works in the Beatrix Potter series and closely associated with Hill Top Farm, the author’s home in the Lake District, which inspired many of her stories. The contemporary inscription referencing Hill Top Farm adds a layer of contextual interest, connecting the book to Potter’s real-world setting, even if not directly attributable to her hand. Early editions in original boards remain consistently collectible, particularly when retaining internal integrity and period ownership marks. Condition; Very good for the type. Light wear to boards, internally clean and complete with all illustrations present. Offered by Atlas Rare Books, specialists in rare and antiquarian books.
