The play takes place in the attic of a once prosperous Manhattan brownstone, soon to be pulled down in the cause of architectural progress and financial stability. Playbill: When the Great Depression cost his family their fortune, Victor Franz gave up his dream of an education to support his father. Three decades later, Victor has returned to his childhood home to sell the remainder of his parents estate. His wife, his estranged brother, and the wily furniture dealer hired to appraise their possessions all arrive with their own agendas, forcing Victor to confront a question, long-stifled, about the value of his sacrifice. ///// The opening night review in the New York Times proclaimed it "… one of the most engrossing and entertaining plays that Miller has ever written. It is superbly, even flamboyantly, theatrical, running without an intermission, complying with the classic unities of time, place and action, and Miller holds the interest with the skill of a born story-teller. ///// The Price was nominated for two 1968 Tony Awards, including Best Play (Arthur Miller, writer). It lost the "Best Play" category to Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. The Play has been revived four times on Broadway. It was also adapted for a 1971 production for the Hallmark Hall of Fame, garnering six Emmy nominations. ///// CONDITION: VERY GOOD; text block is fine; initials DP circled in red on title page moderate wear to covers with creases along hinge and outer edge, chips and abrasions along edges. ///// Studio Duplicating Service, Inc. was a private duplicating service for playwrights owned and operated by NY writer and radio host Jean M. Shepard.
