This rare and beautiful First Peacock edition of Jane Austen?s beloved classic Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1894 by George Allen. While Austen?s works have come to be widely recognized and celebrated works of romantic literature, many of her novels sat in relative obscurity until this decorative and fully-illustrated version renewed public interest in her stories. This First Peacock edition features the decorative binding depicting a gilded peacock across the front cover, as designed by Hugh Thomson. 160 of Thomson?s illustrations fill this edition, in his distinctive Cranford School style of drawing that Thomson founded. The art style became popular for novels during the late Victorian period, and Thomson was hired to illustrate not only Austen?s works, but also those of Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, and J.M. Barrie. The Peacock edition of Pride and Prejudice also includes a scholarly preface by George Saintsbury in which he coined the term Janist for admirers of Austen?s works. Provenance: Prize bookplate from Sheffield School Board on front endpapers. Duodecimo (12mo), single volume. Good condition; cloth binding shows moderate edgewear and fading of the gilt titling, hinges repaired to be secure, text block somewhat loose but intact, and pages are clean and free of foxing. Collation: xxvii, [1], 476, [2] pp. Illustrations: 160 illustrations by Hugh Thomson, including frontispiece. Edition: London: George Allen, 1894. First Peacock Edition. #31306.
