The editor was with Space Technology Laboratories, Inc. The contents addressed Propellant Technology, Ion Propulsion, Heat Transfer, Materials, and Auxiliary Power Systems. Donald J. Ritchie addressed Soviet Rocket Propulsion. Donald Jeanne Ritchie (1920- ) was a mathematician and physicist who has been active in missile guidance system design and development and in arms control and disarmament studies. He began work as a production engineer at Bell Aircraft Corp. (1940-42) before joining the Design Branch of Wright Air Development Center, Wright Field, OH (1942-45), where he participated in preliminary design work on jet aircraft. Following World War II, he completed degrees in Mathematics and Physics (BS, 1949) and Applied Mathematics (MS, 1951). He spent most of the next two decades at Bendix's Research Laboratory Division working on missile systems. He joined the faculty of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute (now Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) as Professor of Aeronautical Engineering, Director of Research, and Chairman of the Aeronautical Engineering Division (1967-?). During this time he also worked as a consultant to the United States Air Force Foreign Technical Intelligence Division and the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. The Fifth Symposium on Ballistic Missile and Space Technology was held at the University of Southern California on August 29-31, 1960, and was attended by over 1000 scientists and engineers from all parts of the nation. In addition to the several introductory, keynote, and luncheon addresses by invited speakers, 125 technical papers, both classified and unclassified, were presented in 25 sessions. The Proceedings contain the 74 unclassified papers presented at the Symposium and organized into four volumes. This second volume addressed Propulsion and Auxiliary Power Systems. Among some of the topics addressed are Ion Jet, Pulsed Plasma Accelerator, Electrostatic Lift for Space Vehicles, Electrical thrust generators, Solid Rocket, Nozzle Heat Transfer, Nuclear Space Power, SNAP-II, Space Applications, Isotopic Fueled Thermionic Generators.
