A fair copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition of Pyrotechnia in contemporary full leather binding. Classed as 'fair' because it lacks the engraved title and the 2 folding plates, and the binding is functional but of poor quality and becoming shakey. John Babington was an 'inferior gunner' serving in the army of Charles I under the command of the Earl of Newport. It is known that he was born in 1604, and was clearly alive in 1635, but this was his only publication and nothing is known of the rest of his life. He was a Member of the Salter's Company - which originated in the salt trade and was first licensed in 1394. Salters were experts in dry salting of meat and fish and dealt with flax, hemp, logwood, cochineal, potashes and chemical preparations. This expertise would have been extremely useful in the hazardous work of making and testing fireworks. Pyrotechnia was written at a time when grand firework displays were very fashionable but the art of making fireworks was relatively new in Europe. It is the first English publication on the subject and has come to be seen as the most important. It is written in very clear and precise language and is copiously illustrated so that the reader knows exactly what the text is referring to and what they need to do. Given that a small mistake could lead to catastrophic consequences, practitioners must have had cause to thank Babington for the care that he took. The Geometrie was intended for artillery officers. It has extensive diagrams, and contains one of the earliest sets of logarithmic tables. The full leather binding has raised bands to the spine and a double ruled line to the edges of the boards. The leather is folded over the bare boards which can be seen internally. The pages are contained but the spine is flat and tight and the boards do not close properly. There is damage to the top spine end and part of an old auction label towards the bottom. The corners have been bumped. The back board has more scuffing and some pitted areas. Contents: title [blank verso]; dedication to the Earle of Newport 2 pp; to the Reader 2pp; Poems commending Babington including one by John Bate 3 pp {blank verso]; table 2 pp; text pp 1 - 72 with decorative headpieces and initial capitals and 18 full page engravings; finis; title A Short Treatise of Geometrie 1635 [blank verso]; dedication to Sir John Heyden 1 pp; to the Reader 1 p; text pp 1 - 80; logarithmic tables pp 1 - 200; Finis; final blank. It is generally clean with the occasional spot or mark including a burn hole in the gutter margin of leaf 65/66. There is a small tear at the top of the Pyrotechnia title and paper loss in the gutter of leaf 25/26 in the tables. The stitching is weak in some places particularly at the bottom but pages 41-44 in Geometrie are only held in at the bottom. There is some mispagination in Geometrie but the ties work (20-29-22; 39-36-41; 52-52-54). Book size: 29.1 cms x 19 cms. Page edges reddened. Description de la boutique
We are a small online bookselling business specialising in rare and unusual books, generally published before 1900, with a focus on natural history, history, illustrated works and some literature. We are based in the beautiful Orkney Islands and have a specialist Orkney/Shetland section in our listings. We run a bookshop in Orkney - Birsay Books - where we have a wide range of stock from science fiction and fantasy to maritime and, of course, Orkney/Shetland and Scottish material. We take images of all of our books to supplement the online descriptions, and are always happy to provide more on request. When you order from us, we ensure that books are properly packed to protect their condition and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for additional security. Because we are based on an island which depends on ferries and flights for shipping, we can not guarantee 'next day' delivery. We will simply get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can.…
